A company built for surfing

History of the company

Like many R&D companies, Surf Pools Ltd "started with a good idea". In 1998, a keen Aucklander, John Upton, walked into the ASR office in Raglan to ask if we would "work on a wave pool". Dr Black examined the history of pools and found that a well-proportioned reef had not been put previously into the pools. They all had gently rising floors along the length of the pool, but no properly designed surfing reef in the pool.

To Drs Black and Mead, the pools were "crying out" for:

  • a good wave generating machine
  • a sculpted floor to make the waves break with the required shape and intensity

Novel ideas followed and the first patents were issued. The next 10 years were spent working on how to do this best and how to meet tight business plans that pushed the technology to its limits.

Surf Pools is now confidently able to produce perfect barrels at 6-8 foot every 60 seconds and good quality 6-8 foot barrels every 15 seconds over a fixed pool floor shape.

Adding our patented computer-controlled reef and generators allows the pool to transition from barrels to soft waves at the turn of a computer switch.
